Turtle Bridge Nintendo Game & Watch review

Turtle Bridge Nintendo Game & Watch was released in 1982 and it was my very first Nintendo Game & Watch. The game is quite simple and very funny. You have to bring packages from one side of the shore to another jumping over the turtles. There are fishes below the turtles and sometimes, when a fish is close, the turtle will go down the water to catch a fish and if you are over the turtle you will dive and miss.

Check my Nintendo Game & Watch collection here!

Once you reach the other side of the shore, you have to give the package to the character who sometimes disappears.
Then, you will have to make it all the way back to grab another package to start all over again.

There are Game A and Game B. The difference between A e B is the speed of fishes and gameplay. Also, the centre turtle on the game A don't go down to catch fishes unless you stand there for 8 seconds. And on game B, all turtles go down to catch fishes.

The maximum score is 9,999. You make 3 points every time you deliver the package to the other side and extra points when you make the round trip. The faster you make the way back the more points you will make (12 maximum and 2 minimum). When the score reaches 200, 500, 1200, 1500 all misses are canceled or if you haven't missed yet, the game goes into a "Chance Time" for 20 to 40 seconds and no fishes will appear and turtles will not go down. That's the time to make extra points !

Nintendo Game & Watch Turtle Bridge is a real classic handheld game in the 80's and has a special value for me as it was my first Game & Watch and when I turned a huge fun of this electronic handheld games.

Your job is to bring parcels form one shore to the opposite. There are five turtles in the water between the two shores. You take one parcel, jump down on the first turtle and then on all the other turtles to reach the other shore. There you have give the parcel to another person. You have to go back to get a new parcel. Sometimes the turtles go down into the water to catch a fish, so you probably fall into the water and get a miss.

In Game B fishes rise from the centre of the screen. The moving speed of fishes also increase with score.

Trivia

Maximum score is 9,999 and when the score reaches 200 & 500 (1,200, 1,500, ...... to 9,500) points all misses are cancelled. If there are no misses, game goes into 'Chance Time' for 20 to 40 seconds when the turtles do not move and fish do not appear.

Cheats and tricks

Remember if you don't move your character off the left bank within 8 seconds, he slips into the lake. Also in Game A, if you stand on the centre turtle for more than 2 minutes, fish begin rising from the centre also. Don't forget that you can only get back onto the left bank once you have delivered the baggage.Number of fish increase with score. With each 100 points, they reduce in numbers, before increasing again. Here is your chance to take a small breather.

Points

3 Points each time tourist hands over a piece of luggage. Extra points are scored each time tourist returns to the left bank. The faster you make the round trip the higher the score (Max 12 points, Min 2 points).

Misses

You get one miss, if you are on or jumping to a turtle that dives. Three misses (shown as turtles on the screen) and the game ends.

Other notices

If the unit is left as it is after game is over, time display will appear in about five minutes. A game is not interrupted even if TIME key or other game keys are depressed during game playing.

Turtle Bridge Nintendo Game & Watch Review

Turtle Bridge is a classic handheld game from the iconic Game & Watch series by Nintendo. Released in 1982, it offers a simple yet addictive gameplay experience that has captivated gamers for decades. Let's dive into the details of this charming game.

Gameplay

In Turtle Bridge, players control a character who must help turtles cross a bridge to reach the other side of the screen. The turtles appear on the lower level of the screen and move in a predictable pattern. The player's task is to carefully time the character's movement to position the bridge correctly, allowing the turtles to cross without falling into the water.

The bridge can be raised and lowered by pressing the corresponding buttons on the Game & Watch device. Timing is crucial, as the turtles move at different speeds and must be guided across the bridge safely. As the game progresses, the speed and complexity of the turtle movements increase, presenting a greater challenge for players.

Graphics and Sound

As with other Game & Watch titles, Turtle Bridge features simple black and white LCD graphics. While lacking the vibrant colors of modern games, the visuals are clear and easy to understand. The character sprites and turtle animations are charmingly retro, capturing the essence of early handheld gaming.

The game's sound effects are also minimalistic, with simple beeps and boops accompanying various actions. While not particularly complex, the sound design adds to the overall nostalgic appeal of the Game & Watch experience.

Controls and Portability

The controls on the Turtle Bridge Game & Watch device are straightforward and responsive. The device features a directional pad for character movement and dedicated buttons for raising and lowering the bridge. The buttons are tactile and provide a satisfying clicking sensation when pressed.

The compact size and lightweight design of the Game & Watch make it highly portable. It fits easily in a pocket or bag, allowing players to enjoy gaming on the go without any hassle.

Gameplay Replayability

Turtle Bridge may seem simple at first, but it offers a surprising amount of replayability. The increasing difficulty and speed of the turtles' movements keep players engaged and challenged. Trying to beat one's high score or achieve a perfect run becomes addictive, making it a great game for short bursts of entertainment or extended gaming sessions.

Conclusion

Turtle Bridge for the Nintendo Game & Watch is a charming and addictive handheld game that stands the test of time. Its simple yet challenging gameplay, retro graphics, and portable design make it a beloved title among collectors and retro gaming enthusiasts. Whether you're a fan of classic gaming or simply looking for a dose of nostalgia, Turtle Bridge is definitely worth adding to your collection.
